We were lucky to see a blue tit nesting in it from February and she laid six eggs as well, which we have been avidly watching to see when they would hatch! Luckily for us they did hatch on the 6th May and we now have 3 lovely baby birds to watch. They are changing very quickly and already have some feathers! Come and see them on the television in reception.

Barbican Trip – 5th November 2007

On a misty grey morning, 22 children with 6 adults met at Farnborough Station entrance, ready to embark on an adventure into London.  Mrs Wilkins had purchased our group saver tickets in advance, so we went through the ticket barrier onto the platform to await our train at 9:58 am.  We were surprised how busy the train was, but enjoyed sitting in our groups, discussing firework displays, music, the stations we passed through, music, pets, music, breakfast and did I forget to mention music?

We disembarked at Waterloo station and walked calmly and safely to the Waterloo and City line for one stop to the Bank.  Some of the children were very excited as it was their first time in London, and others had never been on the underground.  We walked up a long tunnel, up an escalator (notice how we stood on the right, letting people walk/run past on the left) and took a second underground train on the Northern line to Moorgate.

After going through the ticket barrier, we found the yellow line, which took us along an elevated walk away from the busy streets below straight to the Barbican.   Inside we found a building of many levels, multicoloured square panelled lighting, of cement and panelled wood.  After our fortifying lunch, we felt ready for the performance.

We first watched the orchestra process onto the stage, which was already laid out with piano, harp, percussion and double basses, chairs, music stands and plectrum.   The musicians were smartly dressed in black trousers and brightly coloured plain tops, such as cheerful orange, flaming red, and luminous green.

The LSO had brought out their full orchestra of at least 70 musicans!  The leader of the orchestra asked for quiet, and then the oboe played for the orchestra to tune up to the same note.  The conductor, Valery Gergiev entered, as did the compere, Hannah Conway to much applause and anticipation.  The orchestra struck up immediately and played the upbeat “Liberty Bell” by Souza.

We then followed action cues from Hannah for the “Marche Militaire” by Schubert.  She explained that this piece of music was then snitched and adapted by Stravinsky for his “Circus Polka” written for a parade of 50+ elephants.  We clapped 12, 12, 12, 123, 12; 12, 12, 12, 123, 12 as Stravinsky loved to play around with tempo and the metre.  This had the effect of labouring the march, making the music pull and twist.  We had to touch our nose (the horn and clarinet were sharing a melody), tap our hands (the copied rhythm from Schubert), and finger our arms (the elephants dancing to piccolos and flutes) to show that we had followed the music cues from Hannah.

The next piece was by Charles Ives – “Three Places in New England from Putman’s Camp” which had 4 sections to it; a carnival start, a wandering into a dream, a tug of war, back to reality and the carnival.  The compere explained the different sections and how the orchestra instruments played key roles, e.g. the clarinet was the little boy snoring whilst dreaming.  There were also visual cues from a superb projection of animation helping us recall the 4 sections to this tonally challenging piece of music.

The voices of 1500 children then joined together, with some instruments too, to sing the two spiritual songs – “Joshua fit the battle of Jericho and Swing low, sweet chariot” complete with actions from Hannah, to keep us up to tempo with the

orchestra.  A member of the FJS orchestra had managed to bring their flute on the journey and played along too!

The Copland “Appalachian Spring” was a piece of music we all recognised as the “Lord of the Dance”, but Copeland wrote it as a Canon (round) for the orchestra.  It was fascinating to watch and listen to the familiar tune passed around the orchestra until all the musicians joined together for a fabulous crescendo.

Everyone had to watch and listen very carefully, to count how many times the trumpet player, asked his question in the “Unanswered Question” by Charles Ives.  This was a very soft, gentle piece of music.  We also had to check if the cellos and basses moved their bows at the same time as the violins.  (For the answers to both of these questions, ask someone who went to the concert).  There was another piece of animation to accompany this haunting piece of music.

The last piece was Copland – “Hoe Down” which was like cowboy rodeo music.  Our arms waved our lassoes, we galloped our horses, looked to see who was winning the race, and nearly missed the ending!

So if you would like to experience a live full orchestra playing a variety of interesting and entertaining pieces, with explanation, animation, action and drama, in a magnificent London purpose built hall, remember to join us on next year’s trip!

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the parents who gave up their time to support, to help and accompany the children on their day out.  They are Mrs Gujer, Mrs Long, Mrs New, Mr Ozturk and Mrs Wallace.  It was wonderful to share the day with them and without them the trip would not have been possible.  Thank you.

School Enjoys BTCC Day Out
Frogmore Junior School, 2007, Thruxton (October)
Nearly 30 children from Frogmore Junior School were today (Friday) treated to a behind the scenes tour of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at the Thruxton circuit. The children, aged between seven and 11, met drivers Martyn Bell (Allaboutproperty.com), Fiona Leggate (Kartworld), Adam Jones and Robert Collard (both GR Asia) and Darren Turner (SEAT). They were able to sit in the cars and received plenty of autographs and giveaways. At SEAT, many were able to sample the pits-to-car radio used between Turner and his team. In addition, title sponsor Dunlop showed it its huge tyre store and answered technical questions.
Frogmore is the eighth school in 2007 to be invited by the BTCC for a fun look around its paddock in the run-up to a race meeting.
It is estimated that during 2007 some 200 children across the UK will have been to BTCC meetings as part of the championship’s schools programme which is now in its third year.

Here are some photos of the School Grounds Week Competition

13th June FJS ORCHESTRA
After half term we started our FJS Orchestra.  We have all the parts of an orchestra represented.  In strings, there are 4 violins, 5 cellos and 4 guitars.  In woodwind, there are 3 flutes, 4 recorders and 2 clarinets.  The brass section have 2 trumpets and 1 French horn.  Lastly, but just as important - percussion, with 1 keyboard, drums, xylophone and untuned percussion instruments.

We are working through a series of short pieces which are written in the key of C Major.  The pieces are a minimum of 12 bars, with labelled sections and repeats.  Some of the children find the music very easy but we have discovered it is harder to play altogether, at the same tempo, ensuring no-one plays during the rest beats.  So far, we have tackled "Miniature March" and "Jog Trot" which is a tremendous accomplishment for the children after only 2 rehearsals.   We are hoping to perform a short concert at the end of term to the school and to the Frogmore Infant School.  As most of the musicians are in Year 5 or lower school, we hope to playing to parents in the next academic year.

25th May Have a great half-term and we will see you back on TUESDAY 5th JUNE 2007 as Monday is an INSET day.

We would like to congratulate all those who participated and wish Nathasha luck in the next round. We will keep you updated on her progress. Here follows a report by Nathasha and Michael (Class AP).
On Saturday 5th May, I participated in a chess tournament (The second step of the British Land Chess Challenge). I needed to get at least 4 points to qualify to the Giga Final (The Third Step). This is how it went; The first 2 rounds were quite easy and I won both of them, so I got 2 points. the next two rounds were not quite so easy; I draw both of them, so now I had 3 points altogether (You get 1/2 a point if you draw). The last 2 rounds were very quick. I finished the 5th round in about 10 minutes and the 6th round in about 5 minutes. I won them both, so now I have got 5 points. i came second; the person who came first was only 1/2 a point away from me. I won a rosette and a book. My aim is to win the Giga final. By Natasha (Class ER).

7th January A New Clubs List is Available at the CLUBS page. Can we remind all parents and pupils that places will be allocated on a “first come – first served” basis. The majority of clubs will commence the week of 15 January 2007.  However, due to staff commitments, e.g. training courses, matches etc, we are not always able to run the clubs every week.  It is extremely important that parents carefully check the dates and times of each club and ensure that their child is aware whether the club is running or not.
Clubs will run whatever the weather – the teacher running the club will find a suitable indoor activity for the group if they are not able to go outside, and the club will finish at the normal time.
There will be no clubs running during the first and last week of each of the 3 terms.
We are delighted to be able to offer such a wide range of clubs for this term.  We consider it a privilege for children to attend extra-curricular clubs.  However, if we feel children are not conforming to the school code of conduct in lesson times, we will not hesitate to withdraw this privilege.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you about the picking up arrangements for your child/children at the end of clubs.  Unless you have given written permission for your child/children to walk home from school you should wait for your child/children outside the school entrance at the appropriate time.  We would also like to remind parents, that for safety reasons, you must not park on the school grounds when collecting your children.  It would also be appreciated if you could inform anyone picking your child up on your behalf of this.
