Junior School

Curriculum

Our Vision:

Our school seeks to provide world-class education by learning from best practice in the UK and overseas.  Through this we want all our pupils to thrive during their time here and be prepared for their next steps in life.  We want all young people to be inspired by an excellent education that raises their aspirations and enriches their lives.

Core Knowledge

Our school has a knowledge-based curriculum which you can learn more about here.  We also include a Singaporean-based approach to mathematics which you can learn about here

Core Values

We are a UNICEF 'rights respecting school'.   Article 29 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states:

'Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities. It should also help you learn to live peacefully, protect the environment and respect other people.'

This lies at the heart of our school.   We want our pupils to want to make a positive difference to their school, their community and the world.  You can learn more about the UNICEF ‘rights respecting school’ programme here.

Overall, our approach is characterised by:

  • Inclusion
  • Engagement – including stunning starts to each topic
  • Use of assessment for learning to promote effective individualised learning
  • Effective marking and feedback
  • Parental and specialist support
  • Celebrating pupils’ academic and pastoral achievement

'The curriculum is broad.  Pupils enjoy learning and make strong progress. '

Our curriculum will provide lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.

Progress of our pupils is tracked regularly by the class teacher against the National Curriculum outcomes to ensure they achieve at least in line with expectations by the end of the academic year.

Our children will progress through four stages of learning in each topic – Exploration, Experimentation Wonderment and Discovery. Each stage is adapted by the class teachers and year groups to best meet the needs of all the pupils in the class. Each topic will incorporate a memorable experience and/or a stunning start to engage pupils in the topic.   Core Knowledge is linked to these thematic units and becomes the scaffold for what our children will know by the end of each one.

Mathematics is firmly based on 'Mastery' and mirrors the  Singaporean approach - you can find out more by following the link below:
